My thanks to the Perham Sportsman’s Club Members for the opportunity to serve on its Board of Directors and as President in 2019 and 2020. PSC rules wisely limit a Director to two consecutive terms which have passed far too quickly for me.
It’s been rewarding to work with so many outdoor enthusiasts. During the past few year’s PSC built the clubhouse, acquired the Koehler Conservation Area, initiated Club programs, supported other fine outdoor groups and improved the wildlife carrying capacity at our properties. Many committed PSC Members have made this possible. Thanks again to everyone who I’ve served with and who were so welcoming when I joined the Board. I look forward to supporting PSC in its future endeavors.
Officers and Directors (2020); Directors in 2020 included by term expiration year.
2020: Spence Schram (President), Keith Friedsam, Sue Nelson.
2021: Al Starzl (Secretary) Kurt Jorgenson, Chris Mensing, Justin Roggenkamp.
2022: Tim Neitzke (Treasurer), Fred Lehmkuhl, Kelly Melgard and Aaron Meyer (Vice President). Craig Swanson, President Emeritus.
PSC will elect its new 2021 Board electronically. Watch for a series of e-mails coming to your inbox soon.
Some Highlights from 2020: Every discussion of 2020 brings up COVID-19 and how it impacted life. The primary negative impact for PSC was not holding its Membership Events; particularly the annual Chili Feed. We also needed to delay some of our annual programs such as DNR sanctioned firearms safety training. We support high school trap league which also were cancelled in 2020.
Membership: PSC has a strong 294 paid membership in November 2020.
Financial: We end 2020 financially secure and having done a lot. Please look at the 2019 year-end financials and 2021 Budget posted on our website here: https://www.perhamsportsman.com/annual-meeting.html
PSC met its financial goals in a tough year.
The Mystery Gun Safe is a big highlight of the Chili Feed. We are currently selling $10 raffle tickets at the Sports Shop for a Browning SR33-33 gun safe that will include at least another $2,000 in mystery contents. The drawing will be on 12/28/20. Please stop by Gene’s Sport Shop and pick up a raffle ticket.
During 2020, PSC completed funding its operating reserve account at $50,000. The Club Mortgage was paid down by $28,000 (including an extra $10,000 principle reduction) in the twelve months ending 10/31/20. Debt will be approximately $73,000 at the end of the year. Assuming PSC can continue to make extra principle reductions in 2021 and 2022 the mortgage can be retired by the end of 2023!
Clubhouse and Koehler: Use of the Clubhouse was down due to restrictions on group activities. An elevated shooting platform for archery is approved and materials purchased. Construction will be in spring 2021. There will be a need for a range day next spring to maintain the target range, shed and fences. Koehler Conservation Area; PSC continued to improve the property completing a wetland restoration (with another pending) and habitat improvements including CRP, food plots and ground cover. We are currently underway with mentored hunting at the Koehler property. Eight deer have been harvested as of November 20. Thanks to Dale Wanderi, Aaron Meyer, Nick Theroux and our mentors for their efforts at Koehler.
Education: Fred Lehmkuhl grabbed hold of the Firearms Safety Training program once it was allowed to resume by the DNR. Starting in September PSC instructors provided classes for 74 students. There is tremendous demand for safety training and we had students from as far away as Marshall. Several families spent a night in Perham and commented favorably about the community.
The Club also provided scholarships to graduating students in Perham and New York Mills.
We held winter in-door archery at the old high school during the past winter in partnership with the North Country Archers. We held puppy training classes taught by Bob Louiseau during 2020.
We supported Camp Woody (youth waterfowling skills camp) which was taken over by the Fergus Falls Fish and Game Club. Unfortunately, the 2020 camp fell victim to Covid 19. We trust it will return next year better than ever.
Executive Director Nick Theroux keeps the club operating in a lot of ways that aren’t well recognized and deserves our thanks. The Constant Contact emails originate with him and Carmen McCullough. A ton of Clubhouse operations are taken care of by Nick including mechanical systems. Nick also networks with various area organizations on behalf of the Club. We continue our friendship with the East Otter Tail Deer Hunters Association
The Road Ahead: The 2021 Board will build a plan for next year. There are a lot of opportunities in expanding firearms and archery opportunities. We want to create more opportunity for Member participation. Once COVID restrictions pass, a Membership Meeting will be held.
In the mean-time be safe on the hunting and fishing trail. PSC couldn’t be successful without you and your support. Thanks!

PSC met its financial goals in a tough year.
- A successful five prize summer raffle and the recently completed on-line auction held instead of our traditional Chili Feed.
- While not as much fun as the Chili Feed the on-line auction succeeded with the tremendous support of our sponsors and donors. The two events netted over $50,000 to pay for Clubhouse operations, scholarships, and land improvements.
- Our LP can recycling program has successfully continued with some improvements in equipment.
- To improve timber management at Koehler a selective harvest will bring the Club about $6,000.
- We also received a one-time donation of $50,000 for which we are very grateful.
